This is an oversimplified technique for how solar panels are created, so let’s break down the manufacturing process step by step for a better understanding.


  • Build solar silicon cells that are either p-type or n-type, meaning positively or negatively charged. P-type silicon cells were the classic structure of solar cells. A p-type silicon cell is created on a positively charged base, meaning the bottom layer is mixed with boron and the bottom layer is mixed with phosphorus.
  • But the n-type cell is created oppositely, with the phosphorus functioning as the base. The key distinction is that n-type cells offer better efficiency and are not impacted by light-induced degradation, or loss in output when exposed to strong sunlight.
  • Solar cells are created from crystalline silicon that is melted and combined with gallium or boron to make wafers called silicon ingots. Phosphorous is then added to the silicon, and coupled with the gallium or boron, these components give silicon its electrical capability.
  • The silicon ingot is then sliced into thin sheets and an anti-reflective coating is added to catch the sunlight instead of reflecting it away from the panels. Thin wires are then carved into the cells to catch and transport the electrical current within the cell.
  • The solar cells become semiconductors of electricity which is generated by the photovoltaic effect, when the sunlight’s photons are absorbed, electrons then drift within the solar cells to create energy.
  • Monocrystalline solar panels are made from one silicon fragment but for polycrystalline panels, numerous silicon fragments are fused together in one big sheet to form the silicon wafers for the solar panel.


  • Solder solar cells together to form one panel, usually 60 or 72 solar cells form one panel.


  • Install the rear sheet which protects the bottom of the solar cells.


  • Install the glass front. This allows light to get through to the solar cells and offers a protective layer.


  • Seal a metal frame around the panel using silicon to fuse all of the layers together.


  • Install the junction box which protects the solar panel’s electrical lines from damage.


  • Test solar panel for quality and robustness before shipping out for use.
